This draft started out mediocre, but the numerous Confux bombs changed the tide.
Pack 1
Pick 1
Spoiler:
Infest and Scavenger Drake are excellent cards - and here lies the problem. If I pick one, the player I am feeding will be sure I'm signaling him to go into black.
Instead, I pick Sanctum Gargoyle, which is a risk in this pick - if the guys I'm feeding will take black, this hampers a possible Esper deck. Still.
My pick:
Pick 2
Spoiler:
Groovie. The guy who'se feeding me is not into white. Qasali is sometimes better, but I prefer Ranger of Eos here because it's monowhite, splashable and it's very early in the draft so I might be able to find some useful 1/1 creatures to bring.
My pick:
Pick 3
Spoiler:
Very strong pack!
3rd pick of Branching Bolt, Resounding Silence, Infest & Fatesticher ! This is indeed a rarely powerful pack. I still with the white.
My pick:
Pick 4
Spoiler:
Another ranger here, I like him less here but I don't see interesting alternatives in my colors ... though maybe I should have picked the stinger in case I would go Naya.
My pick:
Pick 5
Spoiler:
Welkin Guide is not too bad here, but the fixer is better.
My pick:
Pick 6
Spoiler:
I prefer the roar instead of the Naya-colored fixer.
My pick:
Pick 7
Spoiler:
Lots of Naya goodness I'm missing out here, thinking for some reason that I'll go with a Bant deck.
My pick:
Pick 8
Spoiler:
My pick:
Pick 9
Spoiler:
My pick:
Pick 10
Spoiler:
Sweet, a 10th pick Qasali. I must be doing something right.
My pick:
Pick 11
Spoiler:
Taking the Jund Panorama just because of a possible 5 color deck if I see something like Maelstorm Angel in Conflux. I don't like 5 colored decks in Reborn drafts, but keeping the option here.
My pick:
Pick 12
Spoiler:
My pick:
Pick 13
Spoiler:
My pick:
Pick 14
Pack 2
Pick 1
Spoiler:
Something like Obelisk of Alara does gives a little insentive to splash some colors.
My pick:
Pick 2
Spoiler:
My neihbour to the left is being very nice here. Well, I took all the white from pack one, it's not like he can splash for it.
My pick:
Pick 3
Spoiler:
3 grade A bombs in the first 3 picks :)
My pick:
Pick 4
Spoiler:
I would usually take Manaforce Mace, but the obelisk and the lack of a clear tribe (except green-white) encourages me to take Rupture Spire.
My pick:
Pick 5
Spoiler:
Great body + removal. My deck is rather fat, which is starting to worry me. I'm not sure I'll survived against a fast deck, but my fatties are very strong.
My pick:
Pick 6
Spoiler:
Rhox Medidant is useless so far as I have almost no green permanents. I take Cylian Sunsliger, thinking that at worst it's an easily castable 2/2.
My pick:
Pick 7
Spoiler:
Slime is not that good as my deck doesn't have too many cheap creatures to devour.
My pick:
Pick 8
Spoiler:
In color bomb, if I get to cast it. Despite my thoughts about lowering my mana curve, its too good to pass, and Fusion is not solid enough.
My pick:
Pick 9
Spoiler:
Now this is a nice one - it is my favorite Paragon. I might be able to activate it with the Rupture Spire and Panoramas.
My pick:
Pick 10
Spoiler:
Rather late armilary sphere - just what my deck needed. It is important not just for fixing my colors, but also boosting me quickly to a high number of lands so I can activate my killer spells.
My pick:
Pick 11
Spoiler:
Finally, a 1-drop for my Ranger of Eos. Not great but playable with the ranger/s.
My pick:
Pick 12
Spoiler:
And another one - looks like I will be playing at least one ranger after all.
My pick:
Pick 13
Spoiler:
My pick:
Pick 14
Pack 3
Pick 1
Spoiler:
Remmeber all the possible Naya goodness? I got almost no blue cards, so Naya it is.
My pick:
Pick 2
Spoiler:
I still prefer not to go too heavy on the red, but keep the core of my deck green-white at this point. Since I am trying to go 5 colors for the obelisk and paragon, I need every good fixer I can get.
My pick:
Pick 3
Spoiler:
I'm a bit lacking on removal.
My pick:
Pick 4
Spoiler:
A mana booster & fixer.
My pick:
Pick 5
Spoiler:
And another.
My pick:
Pick 6
Spoiler:
I don't take the cyclops even my deck will have 5 colors of mana, because so far none of my cards requires black mana (and I prefer to keep it that way).
I take the life gain simply because of the cascade, there are good things I can cascade into like mana & Knights of the Relinquary.
My pick:
Pick 7
Spoiler:
My pick:
Pick 8
Spoiler:
This can save me against a fast deck.
My pick:
Pick 9
Spoiler:
A huge number of mana fixers in this deck - perfect.
My pick:
Only at the end of the draft I discover the that I’m in fact drafting Naya deck and not a Bant deck – the two Waveskimmer Avens gave me the (wrong) impression I was drafting Bant.
This is the most bomb-heavy deck I drafted in a while. Here is the decklist:
Creatures
Sanctum Gargoyle
Ranger of Eos (played one of the 2 I had)
Waveskimmer Aven
Qasali Ambusher
Knight of the Reliquary
Nactal Hunt-Pride
Cylian Sunsinger
Aven Trailblaze
Vagrant Plowbeast
Paragon of the Amesha
Tukatounge Thallid
Retalliator Griffin
Winged Coatl
Grizzled Leotau
Rhox Brute
Cerodon Yearling
Spells
Resounding Silence
Obelisk of Alara
Martial Coup
Sangrite Backlash
Lands & Mana
Armillary Sphere
Trace of Abundance X 2
Bant Panorama
Rupture Spire
Island
Mount X 2
Forest X 4
Plains X 4
I went 2-0 against a Bant deck which was similar in spirit to my deck, minus all the bombs. Game one my opponent gained a huge amount of life with an exalted Rhox Monk, but was stopped by activated Paragon of Amesha + Nacatl Hunt-Pride which gained me an even greater amount of life while killing his dudes one by one.
I finished that game with a 8 lands and a ridiculous hand of Obelisk of Alara, Martial Coup & 2 Waveskimmer Avens.
Game 2 was even easier. An amusing moment was when I discovered he had a Hunt-Pride of his own, and the next turn I draw & cast my Hunt-Pride.
